Your rights as a credit card holder in India
The RBI's card rules protect you on closing a card, unsolicited cards, interest on charges and your billing date. What they say, in plain words.
The Reserve Bank of India’s directions on credit and debit cards set rules every card issuer must follow. These points come from the RBI’s FAQs on those directions.
Closing your card
A request to close a credit card has to be honoured within seven working days.
No cards or upgrades you didn’t ask for
Card issuers are not allowed to send unsolicited credit cards, and must take your prior, explicit consent before issuing one.
No interest on unpaid charges and taxes
Issuers can’t charge interest or other charges on unpaid taxes, levies or charges.
Choosing your billing cycle
You must be given the option, at least once, to choose the starting or closing day of your billing cycle.
If something goes wrong
Complain to your bank first, in writing, and keep the reference number. If the bank doesn’t resolve it, you can take the complaint to the RBI Ombudsman.
